GENERAL PURPOSE
Reporting to the Assistant Director of Transportation Services, the Routing Coordinator is responsible for exercising independent judgment in making decisions in the management of the department routing program area by providing supervision of assigned staff and overseeing the planning and implementation of school bus routes to meet the criteria established by the Virginia Department of Education and the Stafford County School Board.
MAIN JOB TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Oversee the routing program
- Collaborates with the department leadership team to set and communicate department standards and ensures consistent application by all routers.
- Develops short and long-range plans to meet current and future needs of all programs while making the best use of available resources.
- Oversees maintaining school bus driver, run, and vehicle assignment information within the computer assisted bus routing system and the department position control matrix document.
- Oversees the creation of driver and attendant work schedules and the completion of route worksheets for drivers and attendants annually.
- Oversees the tabulation of mileage and student count data for submission to the Virginia Department of Education annually.
- Coordinates the assignment of all students to include McKinney-Vento, foster care, etc. students requiring alternative transportation.
- Collaborate with the Division’s Facility Planning Department to monitor changes in demographics and populations within attendance boundaries and adjust school boundaries as appropriate.
- Supervises all department routing area transportation services staff.
Plan and implement bus routes for assigned students
- Works with the computer assisted routing system to plan and implement new school openings, relocations, service areas/eligibility adjustments and employee schedules.
- Monitors municipal road improvements and construction schedules and adjusts routes accordingly.
- Ensures timely and complete communication with parents, schools, operators, supervisors and others regarding the routing process.
- Performs simulations and analysis of bus routes using computer assisted routing system in order to minimize gaps, overlaps, late buses, zero/low/overcrowded loads, and to maximize loads and efficiency.
- Performs site visits and other means of obtaining hands-on knowledge of student and program needs.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- High School Diploma or its equivalent.
- Advanced computer applications knowledge. Experience with pupil transportation software preferred.
- Five years experience as a bus routing specialist or similar positions preferred.
- Possession, or ability to obtain within six months of employment, a Commercial Driver’s License with a school bus certification valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia preferred.

- Knowledge
- Bus routes and surrounding geographic areas in Stafford County for efficient routing.
- Principles and methods relevant for complaint resolution.
- State and local laws, policies and regulations affecting student transportation.
- Stafford Schools policies and regulations, especially those involving due process obligations to students, families, and employees.
- Skills
- Computer systems, software, and operations for transportation management such as Versatrans/Traversa.
- Operation of business equipment to include fax machine, copier, two way radio and multiple line phone system.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and Google Suite.
- Meticulous attention to detail.

- Planning and supervising large numbers of staff, bus routes and schedules.

WORKING CONDITIONS and PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Work environment is both indoors and outdoors, with moderate noise and occasional proximity to roadways with moving traffic, temperatures that are impacted by weather conditions, and some exposure to chemicals or other negative air quality elements.
- The work is moderate work, requiring exertion of up to 50 pounds of force to move or lift objects.
