GENERAL PURPOSE

 

Under the supervision of the Building Administrator and the Assistant Director of Student Services and the direction of the Teacher for the Hearing Impaired, the Educational Interpreter provides a system of language communication to permit deaf/hearing impaired students to understand and express language in order to learn and communicate in their academic and school activity environment.  The Educational Interpreter will provide each learner with services which enable him/her to reach their fullest potential in communication situations.

 

MAIN JOB TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Serve as a liaison to promote good public relations between the hearing impaired, hearing peers, staff, and faculty members

  • Adhere to guidelines outlined in the Registry for Interpreters of the Deaf Code of Ethics.
  • Adjust interpretation to the level of language system of the student/client.
  • Interpret classroom lectures, assignments, and demonstrations.
  • Voice for student/client as appropriate.
  • Interpret for special request situations related to school functions and assist in structuring a learning environment conducive to communication interactions.
  • Interpret student interaction and group discussion, as necessary, for effective communication.
  • Actively pursue professional growth activities to maintain and improve professional competence.
  • Achieve and maintain a Virginia Quality Assurance Screening Level as outlined by the Virginia Department of Education.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma, G.E.D., or any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school, supplemented by courses and/or training in sign language and/or manually coded English.
  • Proficiency in American Sign Language and/or manually coded English.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge
    • Appropriate sign language vocabulary.
    • Registry for Interpreters of the Deaf Code of Ethics.

    • Basic reading, writing and computation skills

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Work environment is primarily inside, with moderate noise, temperatures that are controlled, and no exposure to chemicals or other negative air quality elements.
  • The work is light work, requiring exertion of up to 20 pounds of force to move or lift objects.
  • The following physical and mental abilities are representative of those expected to complete the essential functions of the job: standing for prolonged periods; sitting for prolonged periods; moving the hands, wrists, or fingers repetitively; moving with force on the back or lower body repetitively; feeling, grasping, or holding objections by hand; identifying colors visually; identifying objects in low light or distant conditions; communicating via spoken language; communicating via written language; perceiving sounds; making decisions using logic and rational thinking.
