GENERAL PURPOSE

Under the supervision of the Lead Skilled Maintenance Worker, the Skilled Maintenance Worker performs skilled work to provide preventive maintenance and repair of the school division's equipment and facilities in the specialized fields of Electrician, Painter, Carpenter, or Plumber.

 

MAIN JOB TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Electrician Responsibilities Specialized Field

  • Serves as skilled trade’s worker in electrical work in equipment, buildings and facilities.
  • Installs, repairs, and maintains electrical systems including single phase and 3-phase systems.
  • Installs circuits for machinery and equipment using various wiring techniques.
  • Installs repairs and maintains complex and various cafeteria and school plant electrical/electronic equipment.
  • Installs and replaces electrical equipment or wiring, breakers, switches, controls, motors, light sources, etc.
  • Troubleshoots system failures, assesses and analyses maintenance and repair needs.
  • Installs school traffic lights, power confections and cables for computers and related systems.
  • Develops innovative approaches to repair systems.
  • Uses a variety of standard and special electrician tools and test equipment.
  • Prepares reports, work orders, timesheets, logs and records as required.
  • Designs projects, estimates, material needs and purchase materials.
  • Assists with snow and ice removal as necessary.
  • Assists the other trades as necessary.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma or its equivalent.
  • Three (3) years of experience in the specialized trade area (Electrician, Plumber, Carpenter or Painter).
  • Valid Virginia Driver's License/Commercial Driver’s License or ability to obtain one within 90 days and have a good driving record.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge
    • Methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the specialized trade.
    • Use and characteristics of common building materials.
    • Hazards and safety precautions associated with assigned trade.
    • Local building codes.
    • Mandated safety and environmental regulations.
    • Operation and service procedures of backflow prevention devices.
  • Skills
    • Use of tools and equipment for specialized trade.
    • Use multi-meters and amp-meters for electrical trouble shooting, if needed.
  • Abilities
    • Make time and material estimates.
    • Work from sketches, blueprints, and drawings.
    • Work cooperatively in a team environment to meet goals
    • Organize and perform work independently
    • Work on multiple projects while meeting all deadlines
    • Show sustained effort and enthusiasm in quality and quantity of work

 

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Work environment is indoors and outdoors with regular exposure to weather conditions; in proximity to the roadway; near moving mechanical parts and traffic.
  • The employee is exposed to fumes, dirt/dust, gases, and the risk of electric shock.
  • The work is medium work which requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force to move objects.
  • Must possess the physical ability to work primarily with fingers, perceive the nature of sounds, make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes, express or exchange ideas by the spoken word, substantial movements (motions) with the hands, wrists, and/or fingers, and discern letters or numbers at a given distance.
  • Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: feeling, grasping, handling, lifting, mental acuity, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, talking, visual acuity and walking.
