GENERAL PURPOSE

 

Under the supervision of the Building Administrator and/or other designated administrator, the Substitute Teacher/Paraprofessional implements an instructional program as set forth by the classroom teacher. The Substitute Teacher/Paraprofessional is responsible for adhering to the duties and responsibilities of a teacher or other specified staff member as outlined in the Stafford County School Board Policies and Regulations.

 

MAIN JOB TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Provide instruction to students in the absence of teacher or paraprofessional

  • Comply with school and School Board policies and regulations and guidelines provided in the Substitute Onboarding, Orientation, and additional required trainings to include a complete a full teaching day (or half day as required) according to the hours for the specific school level.
  • Maintain or assist with an organized program of instruction based on the lesson plans provided by the teacher to include demonstrating enthusiasm for learning and interest in the students and the planned instructional activities, encouraging self-direction and self-motivation in students, promoting positive interaction with and among students, and provide a summary of the day's activities for the classroom teacher.
  • Utilize a variety of appropriate materials and resources for instructional purposes and communicate the lesson objective and its importance to students.
  • Perform all the duties and responsibilities of the regular teacher or paraprofessional unless released from such duties by the principal or designee.
  • Develop a resource of materials appropriate to a variety of academic levels, which may be used to augment the teacher's prepared lesson plans as necessary and utilize appropriate and varied teaching techniques and learning activities both in class and out of class.
  • Assume responsibility for care of materials, equipment, and facilities in the absence of the teacher/paraprofessional to include a neat, safe environment for students committed to the teacher's care, adapt and adjust instructional presentation of subject content to students' needs and interest, and leave the room and materials in a neat and orderly manner.
  • Endeavor to preserve the regular routine of the classroom and implement fair and consistent methods for managing student behavior.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or its equivalent required; Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university preferred.
  • Valid teaching license preferred.
  • Substitutes must be at least 19 years of age; or in their second year of college. All middle and high school substitutes must be at least 21 years of age or in their senior year of college
  • Must complete orientation and related trainings prior to hire.
  • Must complete yearly training for recertification purposes.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Work environment is primarily inside, with moderate noise, temperatures that are controlled, and no exposure to chemicals or other negative air quality elements.
  • The work is light work, requiring exertion of up to 20 pounds of force to move or lift objects.
  • The following physical and mental abilities are representative of those expected to complete the essential functions of the job: standing for prolonged periods; sitting for prolonged periods; moving the hands, wrists, or fingers repetitively; moving with force on the back or lower body repetitively; feeling, grasping, or holding objections by hand; identifying colors visually; identifying objects in low light or distant conditions; communicating via spoken language; communicating via written language; perceiving sounds; making decisions using logic and rational thinking.
