GENERAL PURPOSE

Under the supervision of the building administrator, this position assists in achieving teaching objectives by working with individual students to help them master the skills necessary in behind-the-wheel driver training.

MAIN JOB TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Maintain student progress for behind-the-wheel instruction

  • Schedules students in behind-the-wheel training by age and classroom grade.
  • Receipts tuition fees; and submits copies of records to finance office.
  • Develops lesson plans for and provides instruction in areas of safety and proper use of automatic and manual transmission vehicles.
  • Provides multi-car range and on-street instruction.
  • Evaluates students’ progress; transfers grades to base teachers and issues Driver Education Certificates after successful completion of road test.
  • Completes and issues temporary licenses on a weekly basis.
  • Educates parents on the graduated licensing requirements.

Maintain vehicles and participate in events

  • Ensures maintenance of Driver Education vehicles.
  • Participates in the organization and supervision of the Driver Education Rodeo or any other special County event which focuses on teen driving.
  • Attends and participates in the Partners for Safe Teen Driving meetings – one meeting per semester.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma or its equivalent.
  • Three (3) years of related work experience.
  • At least 21 years of age and hold a current/valid Virginia Driver’s License with five (5) year driving record and experience upon which the Department of Motor Vehicles has taken no corrective action.
  • Provide a copy of DMV record upon appointment and annually thereafter.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge
    • Completed the Driver’s Education Training Program consisting of 96 clock hours as approved by the Department of Education: Basic Driver Education - 48 hours (including multi-media instruction and evaluation) and Methods of Teaching - 48 hours (including in-car instruction). Additional hours will be required if individual is to teach multiple-car range or simulation.
  • Skills
    • Five (5) year driving record and experience upon which the Department of Motor Vehicles has taken no corrective action.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Work environment is mixed indoor and outdoors, with moderate, temperatures that are subject to extreme hot or cold, and no exposure to chemicals or other negative air quality elements.
  • The work is light work, requiring exertion of up to 20 pounds of force to move or lift objects.
  • The following physical and mental abilities are representative of those expected to complete the essential functions of the job: standing for prolonged periods; sitting for prolonged periods; operating motor vehicles or heavy equipment; moving the hands, wrists, or fingers repetitively; moving with force on the back or lower body repetitively; feeling, grasping, or holding objects by hand; identifying colors visually; identifying objects in low light or distant conditions; communicating via spoken language; communicating via written language; perceiving sounds; making decisions using logic and rational thinking.
